Lakefield/Bobcaygeon/Fenelon Falls/Talbot/Orillia - May 31, 2018 to June 7, 2018

May 31, 2018 - Lakefield

Rain is in the forecast for today so we will hangout here.  It's good to have a rest day.  Going through the locks in the rain is not on my bucket list!

This boat is really ready for the bugs!
Yummy!  Butter Tarts and they were really good!  Lakefield has a nice farmers market, better than the others we went to.

 Chipmunk

These little critters were all over the place.

June 1, 2018 - Lakefield to Bobcaygeon

The scenery is starting to change to more rocks, less dirt and mud.  It's unbelievable to see all the rock islands with homes on them.  Not sure if I would like to live all the time on an rock island especially during the winter time.

Home on an island.

Church on an island.  They have "lowering" docks to get across to it.

The Bobcaygeon lock wall has power hook-ups and the weekend was coming.  Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls are very busy stops on nice weekends so we really wanted to make sure we had a spot.

June 2, 2018 - Bobcaygeon

As you can see, the wall was filling up for the weekend.  Glad we got a spot!  Bobcaygeon is a nice little town to walk around, eat, and has pricey little shops to window shop.

Visitor outside our window!

Wallbanger!  That's what the lock masters call them.  This one almost hit us.  They did hit the small boat that was tied up in front of us with their back slide and laughed about it.  We saw a lot of the houseboats (rented by groups of college guys) having a grand old time.  People can rent these houseboats with no experience needed!  They instruct the people to point the bow to the dock/wall tie off and use the engine to move the stern over.  No fenders used!  What a show we had watching all these boats during the weekend.  Gets your heart pumping!

This is why I do not really want to travel on weekends and so happy that we are doing the trip before the boating season really starts.  They pack as many boats into the locks as they can.  During the busy months they put 100+ boats through a day.  With us being "newbies" I really did not want to worry about wallbangers hitting our new boat.

The first houseboat you see had a group of older ladies.  They rent every year.  On the other side of the waterway a group of older men rent one every year also.  When they first started doing this years ago, they met each other and decided to get together every year after.  It's a yearly thing!!

The two houseboats rafted up in the back are a bunch of college guys.  Yup, they partied all night/early morning.  Good thing we did not hear it!

Our plan was to stay in Bobcaygeon for another night because we did not know if we would find a spot on the wall at Fenelon Falls with power.  Bobcaygeon only has power not water.  Fenelon Falls has both.  With three people on board we were going to have to take on water and we were running low.  As the day went on and we had nothing else to do, we decided to check with the lock master if he could find out if there was space for us at Fenelon Falls.  They said yes - so off we went!

June 3, 2018 - Bobcaygeon to Fenelon Falls

There was a lot of "not so nice" talk on the TSW Facebook page about a certain boater.  When I got up in the morning and looked out the window, there he was, docked on the blue line.  The guy on this boat is not a nice person, waking house boaters and being nasty to the lock masters.  I wonder if he knows that he is all over Facebook and what people are saying about him?

June 4 - 5, 2018 - Fenelon Falls

Our first real yucky day (windy, misty, rainy and cold)!   Lots of "dog lapping" sounds  along the hull!!!!

This is a picture of one of the bugs you will see in Canada.

June 6, 2018 - Fenelon Falls to Talbot (Sunset Cove Marina)

Kind of a stressful day!  Cold and damp!!!!!  The sun did not come out like they predicted.  We travelled very narrow channels, large enough for only our boat.  All eyes were on the lookout because you could see rocks on both sides and trees laying on the the bottom.  Depths were showing 3.6 and less!  This had to be from all the grass because our 4'2" draft did not bump.

Check out the big dog!

Teak is happy!  She likes to be around us and does not understand that she must stay down below while we are going through locks.

We had 5+ miles with these narrow channels.  You must go slow and be vigilant! I read other people's blogs about this but had no idea it was this long.  Very stressful because one mistake and you crunch (rock) not squish (mud/sand) like we are used to.

Through the "hole in the wall"!

We decided to stay at the Sunset Cove Marina with power because it was going to be really cold and lock 39, 40 and 41 were just pass through's because they were working on them.  We needed to warm up and de-stress!  Glad the wind was not blowing like stink!

June 7, 2018 - Talbot to Port of Orillia Marina

A little more narrows, but not as narrow as yesterday!  This is the section that they were working on, lock 39, 40 and 41.  All the trees/shrubs along the banks have been removed and lock walls were being repaired along with all the park grounds being updated.

As the lock masters were getting ready to open the gates, a mink decided to run across.  It got almost to the other side and turned around and ran back.  Yes, we had to wait for a MINK, LOL!  I wish I could have gotten a picture but I was busy tending the line.

Opening to Lake Simcoe!  Before you head out onto open water they have quite a bit of wall space for boaters to tie up.  They have a big sign stating "watch the weather" and "Lake Simcoe can be very dangerous".

Great day on Lake Simcoe, nice and calm!  I hope all of our open water is this way.

We don't understand, but both times that we were in open water we were bombarded with flying bugs.  They covered the entire boat!  They were even all over us!  Thank goodness they did not bite!

This is a good picture of the grass that is all through the TSW.  Reading other blogs before this trip, boaters would complain about it and have to put their engines in reverse to knock it off their props.  We have had no problems so far!  Knock on Wood!!!!!!

After we got settled into our slip and walked Teak, we decided to walk the town and find a place to eat.  We decided on Italian food and it was really good!
