June 2, 2016 Gulfport to New Orleans

Another early start!  At 6:30 am we were on our way hoping to beat the rain or thunderstorms that were predicted.   We had a reservation at Pontchartrain Landing this time.  It was only one boat so they were able to get us in.

Good morning Gulfport!

The clouds are building as we leave Gulfport.

I think we left just in time!  It looked like it was following us but it wasn't.

Which way were they going?

Here comes our second TMCA boat.  M/V Mr. Happy with Owen and Jill Taylor.

At 1:30 pm when we were almost to the flood gate coming into New Orleans we noticed a Coast Guard boat coming towards us.  They started to speed up and we thought they were just going to pass but they pulled in behind us and called us on the radio by boat name.  They wanted to pull along side us and come aboard.  I asked if they were afraid of dogs and told them that we had a Sheltie and that she was going to bark.  They said it was not a problem and boarded on the port side of our boat.  Once aboard, they asked Josh for his driver's license and Coast Guard registration.   He gave it to them, they looked at it, put some information on a piece of paper and went back to their own boat.  The last time we were boarded they did a complete safety check but this time they did not possibly because Josh showed them our Safety Certificate that Doug Chappell gave us just before we headed out on this trip.

In the Industrial Canal. As always, a train was going through when we wanted the Almonaster (L & N) railroad bridge to be lifted to get to the marina.  The wait was only about 15 minutes - not bad.  As you can see the current was flowing and the wind was blowing.  We were so glad that we did not have to try to get into a Seabrook Marina  slip.  With this current it would have been something!

M/V Last Trade safely docked at Pontchartrain Landing!

There was a 55 ft Nordhaven docked on the other side of us.  Talking with the gentleman on board, he told us that this boat has been all over the world.  It crossed the Atlantic and cruised many countries bordering on the Med. It even had missiles shooting by it when in Israel.  It just came in from Mexico for a wedding then was heading on to Florida.  He has been on this boat with the owners for the past several years.  Love the boat, but not my kind of cruising!

We will stay here until we get a weather window to move on.  We need at least two good days because we do not know how fast we can get through the two Mississippi locks, and don't yet know if we will be anchoring somewhere in Lafitte or if we will be able to make it all the way to Houma.  The Houma Municipal Marina is our next safe port.
