9/19/2014 - Friday - Houma to BoomTown

Last night was interesting!  A huge boat was going under the Houma bridge around 11 PM and there was a big boom and a flash of light.  This boat was so close to the top of the bridge we were not sure what hit or what they hit.  We think it was their radar or satellite TV.  This would have been fantastic to see during the daylight.  This is a picture of the boat we think went through and hit.

I will start off by saying that today was not our best day!  We all headed out at 8:00 AM with a breeze.  Some of the tows were saying that it was blowing 30 mph and some said 20+ on the nose.  One good thing was it kept the heat down but not good if we had to anchor with it.  As we got near the anchorages we checked them out.  At mile 20, Lake Salvador was too open, it's a no go. Mile 15 (Lake Salvador's second entrance) would not hold all of us so we carried on.  There was a wall (bulkhead) down the Barataria that we could go to but they wanted $40 a night with no power and it was an hour out of our way so we decided not to go.  Several years ago we saw a concrete barge dock just passed the barge that we tied to on our last trip so we decided check it out.  A nice gentleman came out and said we could tie up (permission required) but as we were waiting for a tow to come by a neighbor on the other side said we should go to the Boomtown Casino bulkhead wall - less tows.  He was right!!!!  We started tying up to the barge dock and after two of us were tied a tow came by and we were almost washed on top of the concrete dock!  This will not do!  On to Boomtown.  Next time we will make it a one day run from Houma to New Orleans (or vice versa!)  Boomtown is not the best tie up either.  Our "dog screws" that screw into the ground were not working, so we put our lines through holes in the rusty old metal dilapidated bulkhead with rubber tubing around the line to stop chafing.  Sure hope the tows take pity on us tonight!

After we were docked, we noticed a "light boat" (towboat without a barge) that was slowly coming by.  Josh tried to get them on the radio to tell them thanks for the slow bell (passing by us slowly) but they started backing up and yelling "Our wives said we could!"  They pulled up behind us and got off to go gambling at BoomTown Casino. Life on the water is fun! We are now less than 5 miles from the Harvey Lock (entrance to the Mississippi river) and with some luck we'll be docked at our N.O. Marina by early afternoon.
