April 5, 2014 Morgan City and Berwick by Car

The plan was to get up at 6 am, get fuel and head to Morgan City.  When our alarm went off at 6, Josh said we may be going back to bed.  I said what?  He told me that after I went to bed last night, Curtis sent a text telling us that it was flooding in Berwick and Morgan City and the road along the waterfront was under water.  This would not be good because the docks would be under water too.

Kay kicked into action and started calling around to see if she could get more information.  Along with this situation, we were fogged in!  The day was not starting off well!  We determined that the latest we could leave Delcambre would be 9 am to make it to Berwick or Morgan City before dark.

It would be a disaster if we left and had no place to stop so we decided to stay another day and rent a car to go check it out for ourselves.  Wendell Verret, Port Director, Port of Delcambre also contacted both cities for us to find out information.  He came back to us and said that Morgan City was not an option but Berwick said for us to come - their docks were fine.

Kay got the rent car, came back for all of us (total of six people) and we all piled into her rental Jeep.  Two in the front, three in the back seats and one person in the trunk (back).  Off to Berwick we went!

Atchafalaya river is flowing!  Berwick docks.

Look at the current flowing!

We also checked out the Berwick Bay Boat Launch, St. Mary Parish boat docks on the ICW just before Berwick / Morgan City.  The current was a lot better here and because the water is so high we'll try to stop at these docks tomorrow.  If for some reason this is not possible, plan B is to go to the Berwick docks.

We stopped in and talked to Bubba Slaughter, Berwick Chief Administrative Officer to get approval to dock at the Berwick City docks and he presented each of us with great long sleeve t-shirts embroidered with the City logo.
